Your neck follows your screen

The human head weighs about 11 pounds upright. Tilt it forward 30 degrees to look down at a low screen, and the effective load on the neck muscles climbs to roughly 40 pounds. Multiply that by six hours a day and the reason for your afternoon headache stops being mysterious. Screen position is the single highest-leverage adjustment in a workspace, and it costs either nothing or the price of a riser.

Height: top of the screen at or just below eye level

Sit in your normal working posture, close your eyes, then open them looking straight ahead. Your gaze should land in the top third of the display. For most people, that means the top bezel sits level with the eyes and the screen center is roughly 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal — a natural, slightly downward resting angle. If you wear progressive or bifocal lenses, go lower: those lenses force a chin lift to read through the bottom segment, and the fix is dropping the monitor two to three inches rather than tilting your head back.

Distance: an arm's length, adjusted for size

Start with your fingertips touching the screen when your arm is extended — roughly 20 to 26 inches. Larger displays need more room: a 27-inch screen is comfortable at 25 to 30 inches, and a 32-inch or ultrawide often wants 30 to 36. If you find yourself leaning forward to read, the answer is to increase the system text scaling, not to pull the screen closer. Leaning is a posture problem disguised as a vision problem.

Angle and glare beat resolution

Tilt the screen back by 10 to 20 degrees so the display surface is roughly perpendicular to your line of sight. Then check for reflections: sit in your working position with the screen off and look for windows and lamps mirrored in the dark glass. The best arrangement puts the monitor at a right angle to a window rather than facing or backing onto it. A matte screen and a bias light behind the monitor do more for eye comfort than any panel upgrade.

The dual-monitor mistake

Two identical screens placed symmetrically means the bezel gap sits directly in front of your nose, and you spend the day turning your head 15 degrees in each direction. Instead, decide which screen is primary. If you use one screen 80% of the time, center that one and angle the secondary screen inward beside it, forming a shallow V. If you genuinely split your attention 50/50, then center the seam between them and pull your chair back slightly so the whole array stays in a comfortable field of view. Match the heights exactly — mismatched screen heights cause a constant small head tilt that is worse than any gap.

Laptops need a stand, not a compromise

A laptop puts the screen 12 inches below where it belongs. Working on it directly for a full day guarantees neck flexion. A laptop stand plus an external keyboard and mouse turns the machine into a proper workstation for under fifty dollars. If you dock the laptop next to an external monitor, treat the laptop screen as the secondary display and raise it to the same height with a stand — otherwise you will spend the day looking down and to the side, the worst of both problems.

New chair, new desk, new shoes, new glasses: any of them shifts your eye height, and the monitor should follow. A gas-spring arm makes this a two-second adjustment; a stack of books makes it a five-minute one. Either way, it is worth redoing whenever something in the setup changes.
