Match the shape to the symptom
Ergonomic input devices are not interchangeable. A split keyboard, a tented keyboard, a vertical mouse and a trackball each solve a specific mechanical problem, and buying the wrong one is why so many people conclude that ergonomic gear “does not work.” Start by naming what hurts and where, then pick the shape that addresses it.
Ulnar deviation: the case for a split keyboard
On a standard keyboard, your hands angle outward at the wrist to reach the keys — that sideways bend is ulnar deviation, and it is the source of the aching along the little-finger side of the wrist. A split or split-angled keyboard separates the halves so each hand sits straight in line with its forearm. Fixed-split designs are cheaper and adapt fastest; fully separated two-piece keyboards let you set the exact width and are the better long-term answer if you have broad shoulders. Expect one to two weeks of slower typing during adaptation, mostly for the keys near the split.
Pronation: tenting and vertical mice
Laying your palms flat rotates the forearm bones across each other, which is pronation. Relief comes from raising the inner edges of the keyboard — tenting — by 10 to 30 degrees, and from a mouse that holds the hand in a handshake position. Vertical mice come in 50 to 90 degree angles; the extreme angles look dramatic but the moderate 57 to 60 degree designs are easier to control precisely and are the right starting point for most people. Give a vertical mouse a full week: pointer accuracy usually returns to normal by day three or four.
Shoulder ache: the number pad is the culprit
A full-size keyboard is roughly 18 inches wide, which parks your mouse far to the right of your shoulder line and loads the shoulder and upper back all day. A tenkeyless or compact layout brings the mouse four to six inches closer to your body, and that single change resolves a surprising share of upper-back complaints. If you need the numpad for data entry, use a separate wireless keypad placed on your left.
Wrist rests, palm rests and what they are actually for
A wrist rest is not a place to plant your wrists while typing — resting the carpal tunnel against a hard edge is how you compress it. It is a place to rest your palms between bursts of typing. Choose one whose height matches the front edge of your keyboard so your wrists stay neutral, and pick memory foam or gel for a lower keyboard and a firmer version for a taller mechanical one. If your desk is above elbow height, a wrist rest is a bandage — fix the height first.
Trackballs and the low-motion option
If your discomfort comes from shoulder movement rather than wrist angle, a trackball is the right tool: the device stays put and only your thumb or fingers move. Thumb-operated trackballs are the easy transition and work well in tight spaces; finger-operated ones offer better precision but need a larger footprint. They are also the best answer for a very small desk, since they need no mouse travel area at all.
Change one device at a time, not both together — you need to know which change did what. Keep the old device within reach for the first few days for deadline work, but commit to the new one for everything else. Set the pointer speed slightly higher than feels natural at first so a vertical mouse or trackball needs less motion. Most people are back to full speed within seven to ten days, and the discomfort that prompted the change usually fades well before typing speed fully recovers.
